Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
